Disability Support Guidelines
As mandated in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, a person with a disability is defined as any person who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity. Students at the McCourt School who self-identify and provide documentation of a qualifying disability are entitled to receive accommodations during their time at Georgetown University.
The Role of the Student:
- To be responsible for self-identifying and meeting with an administrator from the Academic Resource Center to discuss accommodations at the beginning of every semester they are enrolled in classes.
- Provide complete documentation to the Academic Resource Center (ARC). The ARC will then determine reasonable accommodations and facilitate communication with faculty about those accommodations.
- Meet with faculty members to discuss approved accommodations
The Role of the Faculty:
- To ensure students are aware of possible accommodations and direct those interested in receiving accommodations to the Academic Resource Center for approval.
- To implement a student’s accommodations as outlined in the letter provided by the Academic Resource Center.
- To contact the ARC or Jaclyn Clevenger (see below) if the accommodations require clarification or if there are any concerns with the student’s progress.
- Maintain the student’s confidentiality.
The Role of the McCourt Staff:
- Jaclyn Clevenger, Assistant Director of Student Affairs, will serve as the primary contact at the McCourt School for both students who need accommodations and faculty members who will provide approved accommodations in the classes.
- Work with faculty member to ensure that approved accommodations are provided to the student.
Commonly used accommodations for Graduate Students at Georgetown include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Accommodated Testing
- Approved students may take their exams in the Academic Resource Center. At least 7 days of advance notice before the exam is required.
- Extended time and/or computer use for exams is available.
- Assistive Technology
- CART/Interpreting Services
- Note-Taking Services
- FM Audio Systems
- Service Animals
- Temporary Injuries
