1. What are you currently working on? Where?
Currently serving as the Assistant Director of Operations at the District of Columbia Office of Tax and Revenue, I have the privilege of overseeing several vital departments. These include the Office of the Taxpayer Advocate, the Tax Academy (which focuses on internal training), and the Center of Excellence. In addition to these responsibilities, I assist our Director of Operations in steering the agency’s daily operations. My role allows me to undertake meaningful projects that directly influence and benefit our community.
2. How has the EMPL program shaped the way you approach your work?
The EMPL program has shaped how I approach policy decisions and research by highlighting the importance of gathering stakeholder feedback and prioritizing long-term results. In addition to the substantive information that we are given in class, working as a cohort allows us to improve how we interact with our colleagues and how we communicate our policy goals with others. I use what I learn at Georgetown each day at the Office of Tax and Revenue in working toward holistic, sustainable, and long-term solutions for District taxpayers.
3. What was your favorite memory from the EMPL program?
Being part of a cohort has been an unexpected pleasure– I really enjoy interacting with all of my classmates and feel like I have grown professionally and personally as a result of getting to know each of them.
4. What is something you are passionate about outside of school?
I am passionate about social justice, particularly economic justice.
5. What would you say to someone considering the EMPL program?
Do it! The EMPL program is an amazing opportunity for policy professionals to reach the next level. The EMPL program provides a chance for policy leaders to hone their negotiation and communication skills, think through the policymaking process, and develop their leadership potential as part of a team that becomes a group of life-long friends.
