In an agreement that demonstrates the McCourt School’s commitment to data-driven and global policy scholarship, Georgetown Provost and Executive Vice President Robert M. Groves and Netherlands Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) Director General Tjark Tjin-a-Tsoi, signed a memorandum of understanding on Tuesday, February 6.

The MOU formalizes their commitment to collaborate on the use of administrative data and big data to inform evidence-based policy, and to advance research in areas related to data science, artificial intelligence and machine learning.

At the signing, Provost Groves expressed his intent to work with CBS on knowledge exchange, research and innovation in the area of official statistics saying, “”This new data world we are now entering involves partnerships. One attribute of the old world from which we are emerging is that there have been sub-fields that worked independently. These fields are increasingly now sharing data and thus we must collaborate in new ways.”

The Massive Data Institute at Georgetown’s McCourt School of Public Policy is an interdisciplinary research center devoted to the study of high-dimensional data to answer public policy questions.

The Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek, often abbreviated to CBS– is a Dutch governmental institution founded in 1899 that gathers statistical information about the Netherlands.
