Linkage Seminar

Gathering and Linking Nationwide Eviction Data – Carl Gershenson and Joe Fish

On Thursday, May 13th, Carl Gershenson and Joe Fish from the Eviction Lab joined MDI Research Prof. Amy O’Hara to discuss the challenges of linking national eviction data.

The Eviction Lab at Princeton University has assembled the largest and most comprehensive database of eviction records in the United States. To better understand the role that evictions play as a cause and consequence of poverty, the Lab seeks to link evictions microdata with external sources of data, including administrative, commercial/credit, and property ownership data. However, due to the nature of court records, the Lab generally must make these links based largely on names and addresses alone. Carl (Project Director) and Joe (Researcher) discussed how they have approached these challenges and engaged in a fruitful conversation with others at the Linkage Seminar on potential new approaches.
