Gene Sperling is the founder and Executive Director of the Economic Dignity Lab at the McCourt School of Public Policy at Georgetown University. Sperling is the only person to have served as Director of the National Economic Council for two presidents: under both President Clinton (1997–2001) and President Obama (2011–2014). He was recently the White House Coordinator for the American Rescue Plan and Senior Advisor to President Biden (2021-2024). He also served as a senior counselor to the Secretary of Treasury during the financial crisis (2009-2010). In 2002, he founded the Center for Universal Education (CUE), which is now in its 24th year at the Brookings Institution and was its first executive director from 2002- 2008. He was a Senior Fellow at the Council of Foreign Relations. Sperling is the author of Economic Dignity (2020), The Pro-Growth Progressive (2005) and co-authored What Works in Girls’ Education: Evidence for the World’s Best Investment (2004 with Barbara Herz and 2015 with Rebecca Winthrop). Sperling was also a consultant on NBC’s The West Wing for four seasons and co-wrote four episodes.
