McCourt professor receives 2021 Article of the Year Award
Assistant Professor Andrea Headley’s research on accountability and police use of force was recognized by the American Society for Public Administration.
The American Society for Public Administration’s (ASPA) Section on Democracy and Social Justice recently announced the winners of its annual awards . Among the recipients is McCourt Assistant Professor Andrea Headley , a visiting scholar of race, policing and crime at the National Police Foundation, whose research focuses on public management, racial equity and criminal justice policy.
At the 2022 ASPA Annual Conference on March 20, Headley will be presented the 2021 Article of the Year Award for her published work in Public Management Review . The award recognizes an outstanding peer-reviewed journal article examining issues of democracy and social justice.
Headley’s research suggests that multiple forms of accountability in policing can be important for reducing negative outcomes. One such example is police departments that have both higher proportions of officers of color and civilian review boards. In combination, she found these factors are correlated with lower use of force.
“This award reaffirms the importance of using research to evaluate and improve public service delivery, particularly as it relates to issues of social justice and equity,” said Headley.
