In Memoriam: Mark Shields

Mark Shields, columnist and political commentator who taught at the McCourt School, died on June 18.

The McCourt School community mourns the loss of former professor Mark Shields, the longtime syndicated columnist and PBS NewsHour commentator who died on June 18, 2022.

Shields served as an adjunct professor in 2005 and an affiliated faculty member from 2005 to 2007 at what was then-known as the Georgetown Public Policy Institute.

He taught an elective class on politics and public service and was a frequent keynote speaker at McCourt’s former Master of Policy Management-Public Service (MPM-PS) Capstone Conference, a customized education program for Inspectors General.

Shields was also a panelist at the launch event for Georgetown’s Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life, on Pope Francis and the future of the Catholic Church.
