McCourt School and Decision Desk HQ partner to offer a hands-on learning lab for aspiring political analysts

One of the nation’s few decision-desk operations is expanding its team to include nearly 150 Georgetown University students for the 2024 election cycle, offering unparalleled insight into data analysis and race calls.

The McCourt School of Public Policy has joined forces with Decision Desk HQ (DDHQ), a leading election data provider. The partnership offers nearly 150 Georgetown University students a unique chance to participate in the 2024 election cycle.

“When DDHQ approached us about becoming their academic home and providing them with a space, we jumped at the chance because we’re able to provide our students with real-world experience in data analysis, election monitoring and contributing to our democracy,” said Leslie Evertz, McCourt’s director of strategic initiatives.

Through the McCourt School’s partnership with Decision Desk HQ, nearly 150 Georgetown University students will be able to participate in the 2024 election cycle.

DDHQ is basing one of the country’s few decision-desk operations at the McCourt School’s new building on Georgetown’s Capitol Campus, through December 31, 2024. The partnership has already proved to be mutually beneficial.

In March, students gained invaluable hands-on experience when they applied theory to the real-world 2024 elections. Working alongside DDHQ veterans, they analyzed data and contributed to national race calls.

“This is not just theory — it’s the adrenaline rush of helping to call the next big race, potentially live on national television,” said Elizabeth Wilner, DDHQ board member.

For DDHQ, the partnership provides access to fresh perspectives and research, strengthening its capabilities and enhancing accuracy for the upcoming November elections. Collaboration with McCourt faculty further bolsters these gains.

“Students love being a part of the DDHQ team, especially those assigned to their home counties or states, witnessing the behind-the-scenes work of calling elections,” said Evertz.

DDHQ plans to collaborate with more students for the general election in November, assigning them to help monitor key races and build on the successful partnership.

The initiative marks a significant step forward in election literacy and experiential learning. By forging a new generation of informed analysts through McCourt’s DDHQ war room, the partnership also promises a brighter future for American democracy.
