Dean Montgomery Joins Board of Anti-Poverty Organization
McCourt School Dean Edward Montgomery has joined the board of the Center for Law and Social Policy (CLASP), a national, nonpartisan, anti-poverty organization that works to advance policy solutions for low-income people, the organization recently announced.

“These four leaders bring to CLASP decades of high-level experience in the executive branch, the Congress, academia, and the nonprofit world. In the challenging days ahead, their extensive knowledge of how federal policy-making works will be of vital assistance to CLASP staff and to CLASP board members throughout the country,” said Joe Onek, chair of CLASP’s board of trustees, in a press release .
Dean Montgomery’s appointment coincides with three other new board members, including Lisa Brown, a former assistant to President Obama and acting chief performance office at the Office of Management and Budget who now works as vice president and general counsel at Georgetown; Thomas Kahn, a former longtime Democratic staff director for the House Budget Committee who now serves as director of legislative affairs at the American Federation of Government; and Sunil Mansukhani, a former deputy assistant secretary for the U.S. Department of Education and senior attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice who is now a principal at The Raben Group.
Prior to joining the McCourt School, Dean Montgomery led a distinguished career in public service as deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor in the Clinton Administration – directing a billion department – and serving on President Obama’s Auto Task Force as executive director of the White House Council for Auto Communities & Workers. His research as an economist has focused on state and local economic growth, wage and pension determination, savings behavior, productivity and economic dynamics, social insurance programs, and unions.
Previously, Dean Montgomery, who in 2011 was elected as a fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration, served as dean of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences at the University of Maryland, and worked as faculty at Carnegie Mellon University, Michigan State University, and the University of Maryland. He earned a B.S. in economics from Pennsylvania State University and master’s and doctoral degrees in economics from Harvard University.
