Event — 2021-2022 Whittington Lecture with Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure
On Tuesday, October 19, 2021, the McCourt School of Public Policy hosted the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure (MPP’99) at the 2021-2022 Whittington Lecture to discuss “Meeting People’s Needs in Moments of Crisis.” Following the lecture, a reception was held in the Red Square tent.
Brooks-LaSure leads the federal agency responsible for overseeing public health insurance programs that support more than 149 million people across the country — including those with low incomes, children and families, people over the age of 65 and people with disabilities. She holds the position at a critical time for public health and policy, as the country faces concurrent health, social, economic and climate crises. Under Brooks-LaSure’s leadership, CMS has a critical role in post-pandemic recovery and resilience-building efforts.
At the lecture, the Administrator spoke about her time as a student in the McCourt School and the influence of Leslie Whittington on her experience. Brooks-LaSure also discussed what it means to make decisions through an equity lens and how that impacts public policies, especially during times of crisis.
