March 30 Update

Dear McCourt Community,

As you may know, Georgetown made the difficult decision to postpone traditional Commencement activities for the graduating class of 2020, until such time as when we can safely celebrate together.

Please know that this decision was not made lightly. Our leadership team is working closely with the university to find ways to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of our graduates. This work is ongoing, but I am writing to update you on our efforts.

1. We will celebrate this spring in a way that keeps our community safe. The University is soliciting creative ideas and feedback from across campus to celebrate the success of the class of 2020 in a virtual setting. Our McCourt commencement committee is working on continuing our traditions as well as planning new ways for our community to connect and celebrate together.

2. We will reschedule Commencement when we can safely gather as a community. The class of 2020, along with your family and friends, will be invited back to campus for Commencement exercises when we can guarantee the health and safety of our community. Your degrees will still be conferred this spring, when you have completed all of your degree requirements.

We will keep you posted as plans for these celebrations take shape. If you have questions and/or creative ideas on celebrations, please contact Associate Director of Student Affairs Jacci Clevenger at jc2505@georgetown.edu.

We recognize this is a great disappointment. You have worked so hard to get to this point, and we are so proud of your accomplishments. We are committed to celebrating with you in a way that reflects your hopes and expectations.

As we get deeper into the semester, I encourage you to stay focused on your studies and connected as a community. Please know we are here for you, and remain committed to your academic success, and to the health and safety of our community.

Best,

Dean Maria
