Earlier this week, the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) and Urban Institute announced the creation of the Commission on Artificial Intelligence and the American Workforce to study AI’s impact on the workforce and craft policy recommendations for workers, employers and government.

Former Commerce Secretary and Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo and former Speaker of the House Paul Ryan serve as co-chairs. The initiative is directed by Brent Orrell, senior fellow at AEI, and Elisabeth Jacobs, executive director of the Urban Institute’s WorkRise initiative.

Working across six research tracks over 12 months, the commission will examine AI’s effects on specific occupations, wages and workforce development, and identify the education, training, and policy investments needed to help workers and employers navigate the transition.

“AI will make America more productive and richer, but we have to make sure that its gains are broadly shared and do not generate widespread worker displacement with lower wages,” says Holzer. “I am very pleased that AEI and the Urban Institute have created a bipartisan commission to consider policy responses to AI and jobs. I’m especially excited to work with Secretary Raimondo and Speaker Ryan, as well as other commissioners from the business, labor, nonprofit and public sectors, to find appropriate policy responses.”
